Lewis and Clark Expedition Umbrella, circa 1798-1806

Barrington Brolly is proud to be part of the Lewis and Clark Exhibit, located in Washington State at the Sacajawea State Park Interpretive Center.

200 years ago, an umbrella, probably looking similar to this one, was included in the equipment gathered for use by the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Although this particular 'Lewis and Clark' umbrella is non-operational, our reproduction was still carefully created using materials and manufacturing techniques readily available during that time period. Ribs were either whale bone or wood. And, as sewing machines were still some years away, umbrella or parasol canopies (as well as clothing) were hand-sewn.
